Storms

Storms

Wales faces an increased frequency of storms as a result of climate change

Hybrid Cars

Hybrid cars use an electric motor to help the conventional engine move the car along. At slow speeds the car is moved only by the electric motor. This reduces emissions in built up areas considerably and reduces the fuel consumption of the car.

What makes up a Carbon Footprint?

This is perhaps the most obvious contribution to our carbon footprint.  When fossil fuels are burnt they produce CO2 which has been locked away for millions of years is released.  It is the rapid increase in our fossil fuel use that has caused global warming.More....

Textiles

The production of textiles requires land, energy and water.  We need to use these resources efficiently when we design a textile product.  Some textile products can help us reduce waste and save energy. More..

The Big Climate Change Debate - How to play your part.

This page contains supporting information for the "The Big Climate Change Debate - How to play your part pack".

To download or request a hard copy please visit
www.wales.gov.uk/climatechange
www.walescarbonfootprint.gov.uk

The pack includes a set of activities including “top trumps” cards, role-play cards and climate change research opportunities to engage pupils in the climate change debate and the COP15 process. These can form the basis of full lessons or can be used as shorter activities in the context of other curriculum areas.

Two activities (1 and 6)  in particular refer to additional information from this website.

Activity 1:Human Graphs

Graph 3, This activity uses the students in the class to produce a scatter graph to compare factors on the information on the country cards. A spreadsheet with the data is available for download here for students to produce their own graphs using Excel or similar.

Carbon footprint. This is one element of the eco footprint which is calculated by converting the various green house gas emissions into tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Students can find out what makes up a carbon footprint here

More detailed information and footprinting data sets can be found here www.footprintnetwork.org

Activity sheet 6: Online Flood map

Make a list of countries which have a coastline? Use an atlas or the online flood map decide which countries are at risk from sea level rise
